During the summer, I was invited to photograph on behalf of a not-for-profit housing organisation providing Supported Living services across England. The organisation delivers supported housing and retirement communities alongside tailored care and support services for people in a wide range of circumstances. Although I am a Midlands and Birmingham-based commercial photographer, I regularly work across the UK for public sector and third-sector organisations. On this occasion, I spent a full day visiting three supported living sites in the North of England to create a body of authentic, lifestyle-led photography.

The brief was clear: document genuine staff and tenant interactions in a way that felt honest, respectful and reflective of everyday life within their communities.

From doorstep conversations and wellbeing check-ins to shared meals, relaxed garden moments and everyday support sessions, the aim was to capture real scenarios with real people, not staged models.

I was warmly welcomed by everyone who chose to be involved. Their openness, generosity and humour ensured we were able to create a diverse and natural body of imagery for use across marketing, recruitment, stakeholder communications and funding presentations. The real stars of the day were not only the dedicated staff members, but also the tenants themselves: confident, engaging and proud to share their stories. Many took time out of their day to be photographed, approaching the experience with positivity and a genuine willingness to help represent the services they value.

Working within supported housing environments requires sensitivity, professionalism and care. I worked calmly and unobtrusively, ensuring service users felt comfortable at all times. Rather than heavily directing scenes, I observed and documented authentic interactions as they unfolded. When photographing within care and supported living settings, dignity and trust must always come first. The result is a collection of honest, people-focused photography that reflects the warmth, professionalism and community spirit at the heart of supported living services.

As a Midlands-based commercial photographer, I work with housing associations, local authorities, charities and care providers to create authentic, people-focused imagery for reports, tenders, recruitment campaigns and marketing materials across the UK.
